After several years & 100′s of annoying fake antivirus infections, the FBI announced that two individuals have been arrested in Latvia in connection with the distribution of these programs. These viruses have risen to prominence over the past few years, due to the way in which they will install themselves onto your computer automatically, and then try and get you to buy the fake upgrade to the infection. It was a joint operation with 7 countries, and months of tracking & data analysis that finally tightened the noose around the suspects – 22 year old Peteris Sahurovs, and Marina Maslobojeva, 23. It’s been reported that 22 servers & a range of other computers have been seized in the raid, which focused on a server farm owned by a Latvian web hosting company. Fortunately, viruses like the one imaged above have now been severely compromised as these two hackers have been accused of masterminding 90% of the recent disruption. The good news for the 1,000,000 computers that have been infected with these viruses is that these two major players have now entered the International legal system, and could face up to 20 years in prison. They are supposed to have stolen over $75,000,000 through the fake scanning results that these viruses will show on the screen of the victimized computer – making it one of the most costly scams in the Internet’s short history. As we have been tackling these infections continuously over the past few years, we’re pleased to see the accused now entering the legal system.
